Mayors Preschool Matters on November Ballot for Denver Schools

Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has introduced the Preschool Matters program that will greatly impact future Denver schools students, if passed by voters in the November election. The early childhood education program is endorsed by the mayor and other Denver officials.

City Council President Michael Hancock believes the measure to be extremely important to the city and the Denver schools. Denver schools Superintendent Michael Bennett agrees, stating that Denver schools educators will do everything they can to pass the measure in November.

The program was developed from recommendations submitted to the mayor by his task force, which was charged with increasing preschool access for Denvers children. Hickenlooper believes that access to quality and affordable preschools is crucial to the citys future, as well as an essential part of improving the Denver schools.

Documented studies show that preschool is one of the best investments for any city and its youth. A recent study in California by the Rand Corporation found that a return on investment of $2.62 in savings could be garnered for every dollar spent on preschool. The savings is realized through lower juvenile crime and high school dropout costs saving dollars for both Denver and the Denver schools, as well as graduating better educated Denver schools students.

Other studies have shown that the Denver schools children will be more likely to read by the third grade, less likely to require remedial education, and more likely to graduate high school and enter college.

Preschool Matters, which will greatly benefit the Denver schools and their students, will cost $12 million annually. The mayor is asking for an increase in sales tax that will equal 12 cents on every $100 of purchases within the city. If passed, the Denver sales tax will still be highly competitive with other Front Range communities.

Funding of the program covers:

Tuition Credits Open to children only for the year before entering kindergarten. Children are generally four-year-olds, and the program may be used only for one year. Credits are distributed based on need and the quality of the preschool program selected.

Internal and External Accountability, Measurement and Reporting Covers the number of children enrolled in preschool, the number of quality rated providers, the program finances, and the academic success of the children who attend preschool.

Preschool Matters is similar to a defeated California measure, called Proposition 82. Though both programs expand preschool for four-year-olds, the California measure was much broader in application and based on an income tax increase only for incomes of $400,000 or more annually as compared to Denvers sales tax increase for everyone, making individual contributions minimal. The California measure also was in competition with an alternative offering by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Opponents to Preschool Matters believe there already are opportunities in place through the Denver schools that may be used to expand early childhood education. Linspire Vs. Windows. Are you looking to get away from Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Products?

Are you looking to get away from Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Products? Than Linspire (a Linux based operating system) is one of the ways to go. In this article we will cover our experience with Linspire and trying to get out from underneath Microsofts thumb.

First we downloaded Linspire from their website paying a small fee of $19.95 with a coupon they offered through Google. The download is about 700 Megs. If you have a dial-up connection or high-speed light you may just want to buy the retail box version for around $59.95. When the download was finished we eagerly burnt it to CD and picked one computer for the install. Ah my laptop perfect specimen for this new operating system. We put the CD in and it booted from the laptop drive right into the install menu which also has the option to run from CD. Can this be true, we can just run the operating system from CD? We selected to run from the CD option, it took about 2-3 minutes and presto we were looking at a full working version of this new OS. It was amazing the menus, the Launch button all very similar to Windows, but it was not Windows. This is exactly what we wanted and more. So we decided to go ahead and do the hard drive install as the boot from CD option is more of a demo mode to try the software. We booted the laptop again into the Linspire install menu this time we selected install to hard drive. I stand up to walk away from my laptop which usually takes about 30-40 minutes to load windows completely. The Linspire install screen reads Your installation will complete in 13 minutes. What 13 Minutes? It must be calculating the time wrong, so I give it the benefit of doubt. Thirteen Minutes later I am cruising around in Linspire with all my drivers installed for my devices, it found every one. Now it is time to start installing the programs I work with on a daily basis, but wait Linspire has installed everything from DVD and CD burning software to an office suite that is compatible to Microsoft Office. To load this much into a windows box it would have taken me the better part of 2 hours. Linspire did it all off of one install in 13 minutes. I am sold, Goodbye Microsoft.

Over the next couple of days the family notices my Linspire computer and wants it put on their computers. No problem I will purchase this amazing operating system for the other computers. Then I start to read over my agreement for Linspire and it tells me that I may install it on all of the computers that my family owns. Wow, I picked myself up off the floor and waited a minute to clear my head. I am so used of Microsoft wanting me to buy more copies of something I already own, it never occurred to me that I could just install the software because I had bought it already. So I load up 2 other computers exactly the same install time as my laptop and I did not have to install one driver. We were all surfing the net and doing our basic daily routines for around twenty dollars.

Now it was time to add some new software to my system, games and other applications to make my life easier. Linspire comes with a program called CNR (Click-N-Run). When you create an account, CNR connects to their servers and will download and install software with one mouse click. This feature is an extra $19.95 a year for the regular service and has the same policy Linspire does as to which computers you can use it on. You get access to over 2,000 FREE applications everything from games to financial software. There are still a handful of applications and games you may want to buy and with a Gold membership you get a nice discount on those. As for anti-virus software you do not have to have it (Linux the operating system Linspire was developed from is not as prone to viruses) although it is recommended so you do not pass viruses through your Linspire computer to Windows computers which we all know get infected far to often.

A week later and our Linspire computers are running great no hick-ups everything is smooth and quick no waiting like in Windows. Than the bomb drops, we wanted to play Diablo 2 and Swat 4 on our Linspire computers. We start to look into how to load the games heres the part where Microsoft gets you. Most games require Microsoft DirectX to play and Linspire has no DirectX support. In short the only way to get the games running is to install a software package that will simulate a Windows environment in Linspire. The other down side is that in order to get the games working you will need to fine tune and tweak the software to get the games running properly. So unless you are a tech. or programmer you are not going to enjoy getting your games to work.

Another problem we noticed is that networking support between a Windows Computer and a Linspire computer is not at all that easy, and is very difficult if the Windows computer is loaded on a NTFS file system.

If you are looking for a nice cheap operating system for home use and do not have a network or play a lot of games, than Linspire is your alternative to Windows. Otherwise stay with your Windows computer for now.

Linspire offers a money back guarantee which we are not asking for, because we want to see this Operating System grow. So we all can get out from underneath Microsofts thumb should we so choose.

Copywriters - Cut Out Those Weasel Words!

How fussy are you about the words you use?

A copywriter needs to be clear and specific. A copywriter needs to communicate. We all know this. Yet how often are we guilty of using words that are NOT clear or specific, and which dont communicate ANYTHING?

Take the word quality. Of all meaningless words, this has to be top of the list. Yet how often do we find it dotted around in ad copy and sales letters just because the copywriter is too lazy to think of anything else?

In UK there is a popular TV consumer program called Watchdog. Quite often, if a particular companys products or services are criticized on the program, a senior spokesperson for the program will appear to defend the company. Almost invariably the spokesperson will say something like, We are proud of the quality of service we offer our customers.

Just what does this mean exactly?

Does it mean that the customers get a prompt response if they phone in? Does it mean that they get a no-quibble refund or replacement in case of complaint? Does it mean a free stretch limo to return their product to the depot? Or does he mean the products are so good they never cause any problems in the first place?

In fact, it doesnt really mean anything! Its just an easy phrase to trot out.

Or what about the word value? What do you mean if you describe a product as being good value? Do you mean its cheap? If so, exactly how do its prices compare with those of the competition? Or do you mean its expensive, but less than you would expect to pay for the benefits the product provides? In this case, you need to quantify the benefits, put a price on them and compare it with the actual price.

Which of these do you think is better copy?

1. Our carpets are renowned for their quality and value.

2. Everyone loves our carpets for their durable material, vivid colors and unbeatable prices.

OK, (2) isnt perfect. But at least it gives the reader some information. The first one means nothing and tells the reader nothing.

Then theres expertise another empty word. What do you feel when you read a claim by a manufacturer like, Our expertise is second to none? Do you feel impressed? Probably not. You are no wiser as to what the manufacturer can actually do!

Suppose you are promoting your services as a copywriter. Do you say, My expertise guarantees good results? What does this tell your reader?

Or do you say, I was personally trained by Joe Bloggs, the best copywriter in the business. For ten years I have been writing copy for (x,y,z) companies - copy which has successfully shifted their product and boosted their sales figures.

Quality value expertise. All excellent, of course, in their own way. But they have no place in the copywriters vocabulary.

An Overview of the Take Stock in Children College Scholarship Program

Take Stock in Children is a statewide scholarship program being implemented by Orlando Schools and the Seminole County Public School system. The program targets students with strong financial need as well as strong motivation to succeed in college. Beginning in eighth grade, students are invited to apply for the scholarships. These scholarships take the format of two years at a community college and then two years at a state university or college.

In order to be considered, both the student and the parents must sign a contract promising to follow the guidelines of Orlando Schools and Seminole County Public Schools. In addition, students must participate in a variety of Take Stock in Children activities throughout their high school years. Orlando and Seminole County Public School students must remain committed to graduating with their high school class and maintaining a drug and crime free student record.

The Take Stock in Children Program targets at risk students in the Orlando and Seminole County Public Schools and helps them learn the skills they need to be successful in college. The motivating factor is that a successful Orlando and Seminole County Public School student becomes a successful adult able to give back to the Orlando and Seminole County Public Schools. The connection between the needs of the community and the needs of the student results in benefits for both.

Scholarships and Support

Since 1996, one hundred and seventeen students have been awarded the Take Stock in Children scholarship in the Orlando and Seminole County Public School area. The program has 69 high school students participating in Orlando and Seminole County Public Schools. 101 students have graduated and received their scholarships. The first student to graduate from college because of the program received a Bachelors of Science from the University of Central Florida.

The scholarship fund has purchased over $300,000 worth of Florida Prepaid College Scholarships for students in the state of Florida. These scholarships are waiting for the students currently participating in the middle and high school levels of the program. Orlando and Seminole County students active in the program have additional opportunities to attend workshops and seminars to help them prepare for college and build their individual skills throughout the school year.

Mentors

Each Orlando and Seminole County Public School student is paired with a community volunteer mentor who helps motivate and guide the student throughout high school. Mentors do not give a lot of time but they do provide a lot of support for students working towards the scholarship. Usually mentors meet with Orlando and Seminole County Public School students for thirty minutes once a week on the students high school campus. Mentors also participate in the Take Stock in Children workshops and activities. Mentors come from a range of backgrounds and are united by an interested in helping the youth of Orlando and Seminole County Public Schools achieve their dreams of a college education. In addition to the mentor role, there are often opportunities to sponsor a scholarship for an Orlando and Seminole County Public School student. Every donation is matched by the state of Florida, allowing more and more students to participate in the program.

Tools will be expected to have easy interactivity with common software, particularly Microsoft office products. Automated output engines (Flash etc) will allow sophisticated effects and solutions without programming knowledge.

Speed of development will be a key feature enabling sophisticated learning courses to be available rapidly and be amended quickly and easily.User licensing will be simple and not restrictive giving companies internal flexibility to develop courses as they desire.

Homework; Staying Focused To Get It Done Faster

Recently, a Homework Rx subscriber asked for tips to help her daughter stay on-task with her homework. Just last night, a student in my Homework Action Group complained of the same problem. I have a hard time staying focused on homework. It takes me forever to do it!

I also remember, as a young student, sitting at my desk, wriggling and squirming until I decided that I needed a drink, or snack, or pencil... After getting lost in the kitchen and sucked into a TV show, it was at least an hour before I returned to my homework. I usually had several of these distractions before it became so late that I finally had no choice but to get my homework done. By that time, I was very irritable, annoyed, and impatient (dont laugh, Mom!), which made homework even worse.

Why did I do this?

I didnt like homework (obviously), I did not know how to do it efficiently, and I did not have the discipline to do it quickly. I have learned a lot since then.

While there is not much I can do to help anyone like homework, I could teach strategies for completing it faster, but that would take 150 pages. So, this article will help you improve your self-discipline.

Self-Discipline Does NOT Sound Fun!

Yes, I knowself-discipline sounds dreadful, but it is time to change your perspective. Just past the point of resistance is an amazing feeling of accomplishment and a big pay-off. Self-discipline is what motivates athletes to win championships and wealthy people to earn their riches.

One of the worlds most successful marketing campaigns was created on the concept of self-discipline when NIKE inspired athletes to Just Do It! Apply that attitude to homework, and great things will happen.

** Action Plan **

Just do it! is a little easier said than done, especially when it comes to homework. However, the tips below will help you get started:

-The hours from 3-6 p.m. are typically the most wasted of students days. Make them your most productive by doing homework within one hour after school (when possible). You will be more alert at this time of day, so homework will actually be easier than if you did it later in the evening.

-Challenge yourself to find small sections of time for homework before you get home on the bus, before basketball practice, or even during school. (There is a lot of down-time in classes, such as when teachers take attendance.) The less homework you have by the time you get home, the more motivated you will be finish the rest quickly.

-Reward yourself. Challenge yourself to do all of your homework before a specific time so you can watch your favorite TV show, play video games, talk on the phone, IM your friends, etc.

-Fill a basket with supplies you need for homework: pens, pencils, pencil sharpener, stapler, paper, scissors, markers, glue, ruler, etc. Keep the basket handy when you do homework so everything you need will be right at your fingertips. One trip across the house for a stapler can cost you hours when you get sidetracked by the TV, refrigerator, or computer. Each sibling should have their own basket and if you live in two homes, you should have one basket in each house.

-Eliminate distractions. It is tempting to watch TV, do email, or listen to music while doing homework. However, the human brain is only capable of focusing on one thing at a time. When you try to do two things at once, your attention constantly shifts back-and-forth. Sometimes that shift happens so rapidly, you dont even notice it. You will, however, be doubling your homework time, increasing errors, and completely destroying any learning that should happen while doing homework (that would otherwise save you study time for your next test).

-Parents: Do your homework while your children do theirs. You have bills to pay and school papers to complete. Doing those chores during homework time will keep it from being so lonely for your children.

-Use an electronic timer. Before you begin an assignment, determine how much time it should take to complete the assignment. Add five minutes and set the timer. Challenge yourself to finish it before the timer goes off. This is great way to develop homework motivation (aka self-discipline) because it becomes a game to play against yourself. For younger students, parents can offer small rewards for each assignment that is done before the timer goes off.

** In Conclusion **

Homework is usually NOT fun, but you can make it much more bearable if you follow Nikes advice and Just Do It! Your evenings will suddenly have much more free time and your grades will improve as you actually learn information while doing homework. Before long, you will develop a much better attitude towards homework because you will have taken control of it, instead of your homework taking control of you.
